Five Reasons Why the Vols Succeed in 2012

If you have spent much time talking with Tennessee fans or perusing Volunteer message boards over the last 18 months you have undoubtedly heard or read someone state that 2012 is the year that the Vols realistically have a chance at returning to some semblance of their old self.  I don't really know what that means in terms of wins and losses but I certainly agree that, at least on paper, next season seems to line up pretty nicely for Derek Dooley's team.  There will still be challenges but they will be more similar to the hurdles that are common to every team in the SEC.

CBC SEC Pick 'Em - Week 10

This year's "Game of the Century" is on the slate this weekend, but that isn't the only tough game in the SEC to pick here in week 10.  Who will the guys pick in the Bama - LSU game?  Two picked the Tigers and two picked the Tide.  Mississippi at Kentucky is tough to pick and will South Carolina be able to slow down that Razorback offense?  See who the guys picked below.

Derek still leads with a 57-9 record for the year while Eric trails close behind at 55-11.  Drew caught up with Michael last week and they both are tied with a record of 53-13.

Tennessee Recruiting Update: Rumors, Facts, and Everything in Between

Written by Drew Pirtle on .

Finally.

That has to be the word on every Vol fan’s mind as Tennessee gets set to face MTSU this Saturday. While it is Homecoming weekend in Knoxville, I would bet no more than 90,000 will be on hand for what will more than likely be a much needed blowout for the Vols. This will not only be due to the Big Orange’s recent lack of success, but also to, “The Game of the Century” between #1 LSU and #2 Alabama during the same time. However, while the attendance is sure to be down, there will still be a few highly sought after recruits on hand. Not to go off on a rant, but that is what is so impressive to me – The Vols are 3-5 (0-5) and are still recruiting their tails off. This team has not been ranked in the Top 25 in years and Dooley is working on his 3rd consecutive top 15 recruiting class. Progress is being made in Knoxville, yet so many are too blind to see it. But I digress; let’s look at what is happening on the recruiting trail.

Randy Quaid Wears Orange & White

It's no secret that multiple reliable sources such as Merriam-Webster and the Oxford dictionary cite that the word "fan" comes from "fanatic".  Also, we all know that when someone is called a "fanatic", that person is typically "too high" or "too low" when conveying his/her internal feelings through outward displays of emotion.  How often have you heard someone who is fanatical described as "even keeled" or "steady".  Typically, those words don't describe such an individual.  Oftentimes in the world of sports, there are fans that take the "fanatical" aspect to a whole new level; none more so than the fictional character of "Johnny" on Major League II played by the always hilarious and a bit out there Randy Quaid.

Many commentators and fans are beginning to look to the Vols dismal performance during the month of October and are becoming increasingly pessimistic about the team, coaching staff, and future prospect of our beloved Volunteers.

During this column, I'm taking the road less traveled: I'm going to be positive.

Gameday Preview: Tennessee vs South Carolina

The Essentials:
The 3-4 (0-4 SEC) Tennessee Volunteers take on the 6-1 (4-1 SEC) South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:21 PM ET/6:21 PM CT. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and can be heard throughout the state on the 68 affiliates of the Vol Radio Network.  The game can be heard online anywhere in the world by clicking here.

The Opponent:
The South Carolina Gamecocks are the 14th ranked team in college football.  They come into the game having suffered through several key personnel changes over the last few weeks.  Sophomore quarterback Connor Shaw replaced long time starter Stephen Garcia before the Kentucky game and the Gamecocks are 2-0 since the switch.  Another change of note is that true freshman Brandon Wilds will be replacing the injured Heisman hopeful Marcus Lattimore.
